Old town, orange trees and the port

Marbella Centre

About Marbella Centre

Marbella Centre is the only part of the coast where you can live without a car: the old town's orange-tree squares and tapas bars, the port with its fishing boats and chiringuitos, and the shopping avenue of Ricardo Soriano all sit within a few minutes' walk.

New Marbella, the hotel and apartment district between the centre and the Golden Mile, offers modern buildings with hotel-style services, and the new beachfront boulevard links the town to the sand.

History

Where it began

Phoenicians and Romans anchored here, and the Arabs called it Marballa — the walls of the 10th-century Alcazaba still stand on Calle Alcazaba. After Ferdinand the Catholic took the town in 1485 it stayed a small fishing village for four centuries, until Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club in the 1950s and put the town on the map.

Future

Where it is heading

Pedestrianisation of the old town, the new beachfront boulevard and a wave of five-star hotel openings are turning the centre into a year-round city rather than a summer resort — and demand for apartments with sea views has followed.
