History
Where it began
Benahavís has Moorish roots — the name comes from the Arabic for “sons of Avis” — and the ruins of the Montemayor castle still crown the ridge above the Guadalmina river. For centuries a quiet farming village, it was transformed from the 1970s onwards as golf courses and private estates turned the hills into one of the most sought-after addresses on the coast.
Future
Where it is heading
Strict planning keeps density low, which protects views and values. New boutique villa projects in La Quinta, Los Almendros and El Madroñal are lifting the standard of architecture, and demand from international families looking for space, security and schools continues to outpace supply.
